En première ligne - Wine-growers facing climate change
From 13 March to 28 September 2025, Michel Joly, an author and photographer based in Burgundy, will be exhibiting a series of photographs at the Cité du Vin as part of the Month of Photography in Bordeaux, in which he pays keen attention to his environment. Free access in the Hall Garonne, on the ground floor of the Cité du Vin.
Observing changes to the landscape due to the effects of climate change, over the course of a year he set out to meet wine-growers who are facing these new challenges on a daily basis.
Alongside these experts, he captures the thoughts and the efforts that drive them to maintain a sustainable viticulture. He puts himself in their shoes and takes pictures from a human perspective, capturing the fleeting moments, techniques, and labour which reflect the energy within a world of viticulture faced with climate change. This series of photographs is the result of work carried out as part of the "Bal des Rejetons" collective.
This exhibition resonates perfectly with the commitment which the Foundation for wine culture and civilisations : upholds on a daily basis to raise awareness of the challenges of preserving and protecting the environment.
The texts presented in the exhibition will be available in French, English and Spanish.

Michel Joly, photographer
Born in Phnom Penh, Michel Joly specializes in documentary photography. His work mainly focusses on the concept of terroir and territory, and more particularly the world of wine. He approaches his subjects in different ways and questions our relationship with nature and the links which tie us to our land. He was one of the leading photographers behind the inclusion of The Climats of Burgundy vineyards in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
In 2024, he won second prize in the «Pau Roca» photography competition launched by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) to recognise photographers capturing the impact of climate change from an artistic perspective.
