Presentation

This year’s first episode of A Harvest Online, the digital version of A Harvest of Knowledge, takes a look at vine diseases. Epidemics are not a purely human occurrence, but instead affect all living beings, including plants. This conference will remind us of the conditions that are conducive to a disease or epidemic developing, using examples that have affected vines in particular.

A Harvest of Knowledge is a series of events showcasing researchers who report on their work on vine and wine related subjects and discuss it with the general public.

Vines, like all cultivated plants, are targets for a parade of pathogenic microorganisms (viruses, bacteria and fungi). Many are the result of pathogens imported into the vineyards of Europe. This risk of diseases being introduced is there at all times and the vineyards are therefore under threat from various emergent diseases, both known and unknown. Epidemics are not a purely human occurrence, but instead affect all living beings, including plants.

This conference will remind us of the conditions that are conducive to a disease or epidemic developing, using examples that have affected vines in particular. We will see that the threat of an epidemic is always present, and requires vigilance from all involved to avoid an economic blight.
