The world of wine
Explore the expansion of vines and wine across the globe
Did you know that vines mainly grow within two climate belts in the northern and southern hemispheres of our planet?
Over the centuries, mankind has endeavoured to plant vines everywhere they went, wherever they could…
Vines can’t grow everywhere. They like sunshine, light and warmth. They suffer in very cold temperatures and need a minimum amount of water. It is above all the climate that determines the areas where vine-growing is possible, where it is difficult, and where it is impossible.
In each winemaking region, winemakers play with the climate and grape varieties to produce different types of wine. Like craftspeople of the earth, they use their expertise to adapt the grape varieties to local conditions. The result is an incredible range of wines, each one telling the story of its origin…
In this section of the Cité du Vin Permanent Exhibition, discover the world’s winemaking countries on a giant world map. In a single glance, see the major players of the winemaking industry and discover the key figures linked to their activity.
Did you know that France, Italy and Spain are among the biggest winemaking countries in the world? But what about Argentina, Australia and the USA?
On the two interactive globes, you can also discover the wide range of grape varieties grown around the world, from Chardonnay to Malbec via Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah… Some are more resistant to drought conditions, others prefer moist soils, while even others are more resistant to rain or disease.
Climate is without doubt a determining factor in vine-growing. Come and see how the sun, rain and soil shape the character of the wine, making each bottle unique.
